How much does it cost to import goods from the USA to Indonesia? Here are the details
Details of the costs of importing goods from the USA to Indonesia: air and sea shipping, handling fees, plus two step-by-step rupiah calculation simulations.
The total cost of importing goods from the USA to Indonesia is generally around 55%-140% of the price of goods, depending on weight, packaging dimensions and product category. The components are the price of the goods, additions at the US store checkout, US domestic shipping to the warehouse, international shipping costs, handling fees, entrustment service fees, and domestic shipping in Indonesia. As a quick rule of thumb: for an air shipment worth USD 100-300, prepare approximately 1.6-2.3 times the price of the item until the package arrives at your doorstep.
That number sounds wide because it is true. Two packages with the exact same price can cost up to two times the difference just because one is packaged in a large box and the other is flat. In this article, we examine each cost component, complete with two step-by-step rupiah calculation simulations so you can estimate for yourself before pressing the checkout button.
Components of Import Costs from the USA to Indonesia
Before talking about numbers, first understand that “import costs” is not a single item. There are eight posts that usually appear:
- Item price – price on Amazon, eBay, or direct brand site.
- Addition at US store checkout – 0%-10% depending on delivery state. If goods are shipped to a warehouse in Delaware, Oregon, Montana, or New Hampshire, this addition is zero because those states do not collect it.
- Domestic shipping in the US – cost from store to forwarder warehouse. Often free if you meet spending minimums or the seller uses Prime.
- Warehouse & consolidation costs – package reception, storage after free period, repacking, combining several packages into one.
- International shipping costs – calculated from billed weight (whichever is greater between actual weight and volume weight).
- Shipping insurance – optional, usually 0.5%-2% of the item value.
- Handling & handling costs – one combined post for the entire process of entering goods until they are ready to be delivered. The amount depends on the type and value of the goods.
- Fee for Indonesian domestic delivery and shipping services – purchasing services plus delivery from the Jakarta warehouse to your city.
| Component | Estimate range | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Additional at US store checkout | 0% – 10% | Zero if the warehouse is in a state that does not collect it |
| US domestic shipping | USD 0 – 15 | Often free above minimum spend |
| Warehouse/repack costs | Rp 0 – 150,000 | Free if taken before storage limit |
| US-Indonesia air shipping | Rp 250.000 – 400,000/kg | Per kg collectible weight, all-in door to door |
| US-Indonesia sea shipping (LCL) | Rp 8.000.000 – 14,000,000/CBM | Minimum 0.3 – 1 CBM, transit 40-60 days |
| Insurance | 0.5% – 2% item value | Highly recommended for items above USD 200 |
| Handling fees | 18% – 45% of the item value + shipping | Depends on the item category |
| Fee for entrusting services | 3% – 10% of the item price | Including payment handling and seller communication |
All figures above are estimated market ranges and may change at any time due to exchange rates, fuel prices and airline policies. Confirm the latest rates before ordering.
Handling Cost Components You Need to Know
Apart from postage, every shipment from abroad bears handling costs: one combined post which covers all processing of goods from landing until they are ready to be delivered to the address. The magnitude is not uniform, and the following three things are most determining:
- Item category. This is the biggest factor. General items like small electronics, accessories, and books are on the lower end of the range. Bags, shoes and textile products are always at the top of the range due to stricter handling and more detailed inspection.
- Value of the post. The greater the value, the greater this post will be in nominal terms because it is calculated proportionally. Shipments of very large value also go through a longer processing route with more complete documents.
- Stick shipping costs. The basis for calculating handling costs is not only the price of the goods, but also the price of the goods + international shipping + insurance. This is the reason why light goods with large boxes can cost much more than expected: the postage increases, and the basic calculations also increase.
Because the three factors are interrelated, the final figure can only be ascertained after the dimensions, weight and description of the item are known. At Jastip Ali, we combine all these components into one offer: all-in price up to your address, without additional charges.
| Category | Handling fee range | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| General items (small electronics, accessories, hobbies) | 18% – 20% | Lightest range, fastest processing |
| Bags and leather products | 28% – 34% | In more detailed inspection, product photos are often requested |
| Shoes/footwear | 40% – 48% | The category with the strictest handling |
| Textile & clothing products | 28% – 40% | Depends on the material and number of pieces per shipment |
| High value posts (above USD 1.500) | Calculated case by case | Documents are more complete, processing time is longer |
The range above is an estimate for budget planning and is calculated from the value of the goods plus postage. The numbers may change depending on field conditions. Always confirm the latest estimate before large value transactions.
Formula for calculating total import costs
You can use these five steps for any item:
- Calculate collectible weight = the largest value between the actual weight and the volume weight. Air volume weight = (L x W x H in cm): 5000. Some couriers use a 6000 divider, so ask first.
- Calculate international shipping costs = invoiced weight x rate per kg.
- Calculate base value = item price + US domestic shipping + international shipping + insurance. This is the figure used as the basis for handling costs.
- Calculate handling fee = percentage of item category x base value.
- Add everything up, add the entrustment service fee and domestic Indonesian postage.
Simulation 1: Sneakers Worth USD 120
Assumes exchange rate Rp 16.000 per USD and air rate Rp 320.000 per kg. Exchange rates are illustrative assumptions; use the exchange rate in effect when the goods arrive.
- Item price USD 120 + US domestic shipping USD 8 = USD 128 = Rp 2.048.000
- Shoe box 35 x 25 x 14 cm. Volume = 35 x 25 x 14 = 12,250 cm3. Volume weight = 12,250 : 5000 = 2.45 kg. The actual weight is only 1.8 kg, so what is used is 2.45 kg, rounded up to 2.5 kg.
- International shipping = 2.5 x Rp 320.000 = Rp 800.000
- Insurance = Rp 32.000
- Base value = 2,048,000 + 800,000 + 32,000 = Rp 2.880.000 (equivalent USD 180)
- Shoes are in the category with the strictest handling. Handling & handling fee = Rp 1.476.000 (approx. 51% of base value)
- Fee for entrusting services 5% x 2,048,000 = Rp 102.400. Indonesian domestic postage Rp 30.000.
- Total home = 2,880,000 + 1,476,000 + 102,400 + 30,000 = Rp 4.488.400
The price of the item itself is only Rp 1.920.000, but the total you pay is Rp 4.488.400 – about 2.3 times more. The main cause is not postage, but the cost of handling shoes which is in the highest range.
Simulation 2: Gadget Accessories Worth USD 200
- Item price USD 200 x Rp 16.000 = Rp 3.200.000 (warehouse in Delaware, no extra at checkout, free domestic shipping)
- Box 30 x 20 x 10 cm = 6,000 cm3. Volume weight = 6,000 : 5000 = 1.2 kg. The actual weight is also 1.2 kg, so the collectible weight is 1.2 kg.
- International shipping = 1.2 x Rp 320.000 = Rp 384.000
- Insurance = Rp 16.000
- Base value = 3,200,000 + 384,000 + 16,000 = Rp 3.600.000 (equivalent USD 225)
- Gadget accessories are included in the general goods category. Handling & handling fee = Rp 695.700 (approx. 19.3% of base value)
- Fee for entrusting services 5% x 3,200,000 = Rp 160.000. Domestic shipping Rp 35.000.
- Total home = 3,600,000 + 695,700 + 160,000 + 35,000 = Rp 4.490.700
| Cost post | Simulation 1 (shoes) | Simulation 2 (accessories) |
|---|---|---|
| Item price + US shipping | Rp 2.048.000 | Rp 3.200.000 |
| International shipping | Rp 800.000 | Rp 384.000 |
| Insurance | Rp 32.000 | Rp 16.000 |
| Handling fees | Rp 1.476.000 | Rp 695.700 |
| Jastip fee + domestic postage | Rp 132.400 | Rp 195.000 |
| Total | Rp 4.488.400 | Rp 4.490.700 |
| Ratio to price of goods | 2.34x | 1.40x |
Two packages with almost identical total costs, even though the prices of the items are different Rp 1,3 juta. This is why the category of goods is much more decisive than its value.
Volume Weight: Cause of Shipping Swelling
Forwarders charge based on billed weight, not scale weight. Pillows, shoes, toys and decorative lamps often weigh many times their original weight. Before ordering, measure the box of goods and calculate it using our volume weight calculator so you won’t be surprised when the invoice comes out. If the original box is much larger than its contents, ask for repacking at the warehouse – the savings could be millions of rupiah for one shipment.
Hidden Costs That Are Often Missed
- Exchange difference – banks and card issuers usually add a margin of 2%-3.5% above the middle exchange rate, plus foreign transaction fees.
- Warehouse storage fees – free period is usually 30-45 days; After that there is a daily fee per package.
- Restocking fee – when an item is returned to a US seller, some stores deduct 10%-20%.
- Items split into two shipments – sellers often split orders, and each package has its own handling fee.
- Goods requiring permission – cosmetics, supplements, medicines, medical devices and telecommunications equipment may require permission from the relevant agency. Ask before buying, not after the item lands.
Checklist Before Ordering from USA
- Check whether the seller is willing to send to the forwarder’s warehouse (not just residential addresses).
- Choose a warehouse in a state that doesn’t charge extras at the checkout whenever possible.
- Measure the dimensions of the box and calculate the volume weight, not just the weight of the item.
- Make sure the item categories – bags, shoes and textiles have higher handling charges.
- Ask for a written all-in quote before paying, complete with exchange rate and weight assumptions.
- Combine multiple orders into one shipment to share minimum costs.
- Keep the original invoice – the value of the goods listed is used as the basis for the calculation.
- Compare air vs sea if the total shipment is above 50 kg or more than 0.3 CBM.
How to Reduce Import Costs
Four steps with the greatest impact: (1) consolidate orders so that one shipment is used together, (2) request repacking to reduce volume weight, (3) shop when US stores offer free domestic shipping, and (4) choose sea mode for large, non-urgent shipments. View our shipping rates details to compare air and sea options directly.
Never ask the seller to reduce the value of the goods on the invoice. Apart from violating applicable provisions, your insurance claim will only be paid for the written value if the item is lost.
