Example of complete Jastip cost calculation until goods arrive
Jastip cost simulation from goods price, postage, volume weight, handling costs, to service fees. Three examples of complete calculations with real Rupiah figures.
Jastip costs are the sum of price of goods + additions at the cashier in the country of origin + domestic shipping + international shipping (actual weight or volume weight, whichever is greater) + insurance + handling fees + service fee + Indonesian domestic shipping. The handling fee is one combined item for all processing of goods until they are ready to be delivered, and the amount depends on the type and value of the goods. For example: a Korean skincare package worth USD 210 could end up around Rp5,54 juta after all components are calculated.
This article dissects each of these components, then presents three complete simulations with real Rupiah figures: air shipments from Korea, special handling category shipments from America, and LCL sea shipments from China for business needs. All the arithmetic is displayed openly so you can copy it for your own cases.
Eight Components of Jastip Costs and Who Bills them
Understanding who is billing for each component helps you assess whether a quote is reasonable or a stealth mark-up.
| Component | Billed by | Negotiable? | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Price of goods | Original shop or marketplace | No | Request a screenshot of the original invoice |
| Additional at the cashier of the country of origin | Original shop | Sometimes | Some countries refund it for overseas buyers |
| Domestic shipping from country of origin | Local shop or courier | Yes | Often free if you spend above a certain value |
| International shipping | Forwarders | Yes | Drops drastically when combined with other shipments |
| Insurance | Forwarder or underwriter | Optional | 0.2-0.5% of the value of the goods |
| Handling & management fees | The party who handles the entry process | No | The amount depends on the type and value of the goods, not the taste of the service provider |
| Service fees | Jastip provider | Yes | Flat or percentage, usually 5-15% |
| Indonesian domestic shipping | Local courier | Yes | You can choose regular or cargo |
Steps to Calculate Jastip Costs Correctly
- Record the price of goods in the original currency, then convert it to the exchange rate used by the service provider. The exchange rate difference of 2-3% is already felt for large transactions.
- Measure and weigh the package. Calculate the volume weight using the formula (L x W x H cm) / 5000 for air cargo, then compare it with the actual weight. Take the bigger one.
- Calculate the basic value = price of goods + shipping costs to Indonesian port/airport + insurance.
- Calculate handling fee = percentage according to item category x base value. General goods are around 19%, while bags, shoes and textiles can be double that.
- Add service fees and Indonesian domestic shipping to get the final cost.
So that you don’t make a mistake in the second step, use the volume weight calculator before you order large dimensional items.
Simulation 1: Skincare and Cosmetics from Korea (Air Cargo)
Assumptions: 12 skincare items, exchange rate USD 1 = Rp16.300, Korea-Jakarta air rate Rp135.000 per kg (estimated July 2026).
Determine the billed weight
- Actual weight: 4.2 kg
- Cardboard dimensions: 40 x 30 x 25 cm
- Volume weight = (40 x 30 x 25) / 5000 = 30,000 / 5000 = 6 kg
- Billed weight = largest number = 6 kg
- International shipping = 6 x Rp135.000 = Rp810.000
Calculate base value and handling fees
- Price of goods USD 210 = 210 x Rp16.300 = Rp3.423.000
- Korean domestic shipping USD 6 = Rp97.800
- Insurance USD 3 = Rp48.900
- International shipping = Rp810.000
- Base value = Rp3.423.000 + Rp97.800 + Rp48.900 + Rp810.000 = Rp4.379.700 (equivalent USD 268,69)
| Description | Calculation | Amount |
|---|---|---|
| Basic value (item + shipping + insurance) | – | Rp4.379.700 |
| Handling & processing fees | General category, around 19.3% of the basic value | Rp846.378 |
| The jastip fee is 8% of the item price | 8% x Rp3.423.000 | Rp273.840 |
| Postage from Jakarta to address | – | Rp45.000 |
| TOTAL COST | Rp4.379.700 + Rp846.378 + Rp273.840 + Rp45.000 | Rp5.544.918 |
Average cost per item = Rp5.544.918 / 12 = Rp462.077. The price of the pure item itself is only Rp285.250 per item (Rp3.423.000 / 12), so the surcharge increases the price by about 62%. The more items in one shipment, the smaller the shipping portion per item.
Simulation 2: Shoes from the United States (Special Handling Category)
Shoes, bags and textiles do not undergo the same percentage of handling as general goods. These three are in the group with the most stringent checks, so the percentage is much higher. Apart from that, the completeness of the recipient’s data also matters: if the data and documents are not complete from the start, there will be additional processing which will increase handling costs.
- Shoe price USD 180, US domestic shipping USD 10, international shipping USD 32, insurance USD 3
- Base value = 180 + 10 + 32 + 3 = USD 225 = 225 x Rp16.300 = Rp3.667.500
| Description | Complete recipient data | Recipient data is incomplete |
|---|---|---|
| Basic value (item + shipping + insurance) | Rp3.667.500 | Rp3.667.500 |
| Handling & management fees | Rp1.764.984 | Rp2.108.812 |
| Ratio to base value | 48.1% | 57.5% |
| Jastip fees are flat | Rp150.000 | Rp150.000 |
| TOTAL COST | Rp5.582.484 | Rp5.926.312 |
The difference Rp343.828 is only because the recipient data was not completed from the start. For buyers who regularly import shoes or bags, this negligence could mean millions of Rupiah per year. Shoe handling percentages vary by type and material, so the numbers above are illustrative.
Simulation 3: Business Machines from China by Sea (LCL, Large Value)
Once the value of a shipment reaches a large figure, processing it is no longer as simple as a retail package. Shipments are treated as general imports: more documents must be prepared, and handling charges are calculated on a case-by-case basis according to the type of machine.
Determines the billed volume
- 3 collies, each 60 x 50 x 45 cm = 0.6 x 0.5 x 0.45 = 0.135 m3
- Total volume of goods = 3 x 0.135 = 0.405 m3
- After being wrapped in a wooden crate, the volume increases to around 0.45 m3
- Shenzhen-Jakarta LCL rate USD 95 per m3 with minimum 1 m3, so still billed 1 m3 = USD 95
Note the minimum charge trap: sending 0.45 m3 and 1 m3 costs the same. If you import regularly, combine several orders to maximize cubic capacity. Compare mode and route options on the shipping rates page.
Calculate handling fees and local fees
- Price of goods USD 1.850 + wooden packing USD 45 + freight USD 95 + insurance USD 20
- Base value = USD 2.010 = 2,010 x Rp16.300 = Rp32.763.000
| Description | Calculation | Amount |
|---|---|---|
| Basic value (item + shipping + insurance) | USD 2.010 x Rp16.300 | Rp32.763.000 |
| Handling & processing fees | Engine category, about 19.2% of the base value | Rp6.282.306 |
| Port fees (THC, doc, DO, handling) | – | Rp1.750.000 |
| Import document processing services | – | Rp1.250.000 |
| Trucking port to warehouse | – | Rp600.000 |
| TOTAL COST | Rp32.763.000 + Rp6.282.306 + Rp3.600.000 | Rp42.645.306 |
Cost price per machine unit = Rp42.645.306 / 3 = Rp14.215.102. If the business licensing documents are incomplete, the processing will take longer and handling costs will increase again. This is the reason why regular importers should take care of licensing documents from the start.
Comparison of Three Simulations
| Aspect | Simulation 1 (Korea, air) | Simulation 2 (AS, shoes) | Simulation 3 (China, sea) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Basic values | Rp4.379.700 | Rp3.667.500 | Rp32.763.000 |
| Handling category | General goods | Special category (footwear) | Machine, great value delivery |
| Handling fees | Rp846.378 | Rp1.764.984 | Rp6.282.306 |
| Ratio of handling to base value | 19.3% | 48.1% | 19.2% |
| Total final cost | Rp5.544.918 | Rp5.582.484 | Rp42.645.306 |
| Time estimation | 5-10 days | 7-14 days | 25-40 days |
It is clear that the special handling category carries almost two and a half times the burden compared to general goods of similar value. This factor must be taken into account before you decide to buy.
Hidden Costs That Are Often Missed
- Exchange differences. Service providers use their own purchasing rate which can be 1-3% above the middle rate.
- Warehouse rental fees. If the goods wait too long to be combined, some forwarders charge for daily storage after the free period has expired.
- Repacking costs. Original boxes that are too large often have to be replaced, and this is subject to a fee.
- Additional inspection fees. If the shipment is subject to physical inspection, there are loading and unloading fees and delays.
- Document correction. Item descriptions that do not match the contents may trigger a reassessment and additional administration fees.
- Minimum charge. Both air (often a minimum of 0.5-1 kg) and sea (a minimum of 1 m3) have lower limits on charges.
Seven Ways to Reduce Jastip Costs Without Breaking the Rules
Saving import costs does not mean reducing the declared value. There are many legal methods that actually have a bigger impact.
- Combine orders. Air shipping drops sharply per kilogram at larger weights. Combining three 2kg packages into one 6kg shipment is usually much cheaper than three separate shipments.
- Discard excess packaging. Shoe boxes, display boxes, and manufactured styrofoam often account for half of the volume weight. For example, tight repacking in Simulation 1 can reduce dimensions from 40 x 30 x 25 cm to 35 x 28 x 20 cm, so that the volume weight drops from 6 kg to (35 x 28 x 20) / 5000 = 19,600 / 5000 = 3.92 kg. Because the actual weight is 4.2 kg greater, the bill drops to 4.2 kg and postage becomes 4.2 x Rp135.000 = Rp567.000, saving Rp243.000.
- Complete recipient data from the start. As seen in Simulation 2, completeness of one column of data is worth Rp343.828.
- Take advantage of domestic shipping promotions from your country of origin. Many stores offer free local shipping above a certain shopping amount.
- Choose the right mode. For heavy and non-urgent goods, sea is much more economical even though the time is longer.
- Maximize cubication at LCL. Because the minimum charge is 1 m3, filling the cubicle to the brim causes the cost per unit to plummet.
- Lock the rate early. For large transactions, ask for a quotation with the rate locked within a certain period to avoid sudden spikes.
Checklist Before Approving a Quotation
- Details are separated by component, not one log number
- The exchange rate used is stated explicitly
- Actual weight and volume weight are written both
- Estimated handling costs are explained along with the basis for the calculation
- It is stated whether the rate includes delivery to the address or not
- There is certainty whether the price is all-in or can still change in the background
- There are insurance options along with premiums
Estimates are estimates. The amount of the handling fee is determined after the goods and documents have been checked, so it may differ from the initial calculation if the data you provide is inaccurate. An honest service provider will convey this from the start. At Jastip Ali we choose to lock one all-in price up to your address, so there are no additional bills.
Conclusion
Calculating the cost of jastip is actually simple as long as you are disciplined in sorting the components: billed weight first, then base value, then handling fees, then fees and local postage. The three simulations above show that the total cost can be 60% to more than 100% above the item price, depending on the category and delivery mode.
