How to Buy Items from Amazon Japan & Yahoo Auction Japan
Complete guide to buying goods from Amazon Japan, Yahoo Auction, Mercari, and Rakuten to Indonesia: proxy buying flow, cost details, and calculation examples.
To purchase goods from Amazon Japan (amazon.co.jp), Yahoo! Auction, Mercari JP, or Rakuten, you will almost always need a warehouse address (proxy address) in Japan, as the majority of Japanese sellers only provide domestic shipping. The flow is simple: the proxy buying service buys goods on your behalf, the goods enter the warehouse in Japan, are consolidated into one package, then sent to Indonesia and the entire entry process is completed. For shipments with a value of up to USD 1.500, the handling charges are combined into one post so that you receive all-in price to your address.
This article dissects the flow step by step: why Japanese shops refuse Indonesian addresses, which platforms are the friendliest for beginners, what cost components arise, and an example of a real calculation in Rupiah for a used camera unit from a Yahoo! Auctions.
Why Don’t Japanese Stores Send Directly to Indonesia?
Many people think international shipping from Japan is not available due to technical reasons. In reality the cause is more about business models and risks:
- The domestic market is very large. Japanese sellers are already busy serving local consumers, so there is no incentive to take care of exports, documents and cross-border claims.
- The majority of sellers are individuals. At Yahoo! Auction and Mercari JP, the seller is an ordinary person who only has a domestic courier account (Yamato, Sagawa, Japan Post). They can’t print export labels.
- Closed payment system. Many transactions require a Japanese-issued credit card, local bank transfer (furikomi), or payment at a convenience store. Indonesian cards are often rejected.
- Warranty only applies in Japan. Electronics and cameras generally have domestic warranties, so sellers avoid overseas buyers.
- Restrictions on the export of certain goods. Loose lithium batteries, aerosols, perfumes and flammable liquids cannot be transported via normal air routes.
The solution is proxy buying: a third party in Japan acts as a buyer on your behalf, receives the goods at your Japanese address, then officially exports them to Indonesia. This is what we do via our import service.
Map of Japanese Shopping Platforms and Their Characteristics
Each platform behaves differently. Understanding these maps saves a lot of time and money.
| Platforms | Type | Send directly to Indonesia? | vital Records |
|---|---|---|---|
| Amazon.co.jp | Retail + marketplace | Only a small portion of the product | Products that Amazon sells and ships can sometimes; Third-party sellers’ products are almost always domestic |
| Yahoo! Auction (Yahoo! JAPAN) | C2C Auctions | No | Need a Japanese account to bid; price moves until the last second |
| Mercari JP | C2C Marketplaces | No | Stock is generally 1 pc and runs out quickly, need a quick decision |
| Rakuten Ichiba | Multi-store online mall | Very rarely | Each shop has its own rules; often ask for addresses in kanji |
| Yodobashi / Bic Camera | Electronic retail | No (domestic site) | Prices listed are generally final, including 10% local components |
| Suruga-ya / Mandarake | Hobbies, anime, retro games | Some can | Suitable for consolidation because the items are small and in large quantities |
| ZOZOTOWN | Fashion | No | Japanese sizes are smaller; Always check the size chart in centimeters |
Flow of Proxy Buying from Japan to Indonesia
- Send product link. You sent a link Amazon.co.jp, Yahoo! Auction, or Mercari along with variants (color, size, condition) via WhatsApp or request form jastip.
- Quotation. We calculate the item price, Japanese domestic shipping, service fee, estimated weight, international shipping, and handling fees, then present it as one all-in figure.
- First stage payment. Generally the price of goods, domestic postage and service fees are paid in advance so that the purchase or bid can be executed immediately.
- Purchasing or bidding. For auctions, we place a maximum bid within your limits. For retail stores, orders are processed immediately.
- Goods enter the Japanese warehouse. The warehouse team opens the package, takes photos of the condition of the goods, then records the actual weight and dimensions.
- Consolidation and repacking. Several orders are combined into one package for cheaper international shipping. Thick packaging that does not need to be thrown away to reduce volume weight.
- Delivery and incoming processing. The package is sent to Indonesia, registered as a consignment item, handling fees are settled, then the item is delivered to your address.
Emerging Cost Components
- Goods price (JPY). Pay attention to whether the price listed is final (zeikomi) or does not include the 10% local component (zeinuki).
- Japan domestic shipping. From seller to warehouse, generally JPY 700 – 1,500 for small packages and more expensive for large items.
- Proxy service fee. Usually a percentage of the item price (5 – 10%) or flat per item. For auctions there are sometimes additional bidding fees.
- Warehouse storage fees. Generally free for the first 14 – 30 days, after that a daily fee is charged.
- International postage. Calculated from the largest weight between actual weight and volume weight. Use volume weight calculator to estimate it.
- Insurance. Optional but highly recommended for high value used items such as cameras or watches, generally 0.3 – 1% of the item value.
- Handling and handling fees. One combined post calculated from the value of the shipment. Very small value shipments are subject to basic components only; for general shipments up to USD 1.500 the portion is around 19.3% of the shipment value. The categories of bags, shoes and textile products have a higher share.
Estimated Shipping Rates Japan – Indonesia
| Mode | Estimated rates | Time estimation | Suitable for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Consolidated air cargo | Rp 155.000 – 210,000/kg | 5 – 9 working days | Most economical from 3 kg and above |
| EMS / Japan Post | Rp 190.000 – 260,000/kg | 6 – 12 working days | Small package, neat tracking, maximum 30 kg |
| Express courier (DHL/FedEx) | Rp 260.000 – 380,000/kg | 3 – 5 working days | High value urgent goods |
| LCL sea cargo | Rp 3.500.000 – 5,500,000/CBM | 20 – 30 days | Furniture, machines, bicycles and large volumes |
The volumetric weight formula for air passages is length x width x height (cm) divided by 6,000. Light but large items, such as dolls or shoe boxes, are almost always billed based on volume weight. Check the latest figures on the page shipping rates.
Calculation Example: Used Camera from Yahoo! Auctions
Let’s say you win an auction for a used mirrorless camera for JPY 45,000. Assume the exchange rate is JPY 1 = Rp 105 and USD 1 = Rp 16.200. Gross weight after repacking is 2.5 kg, and you choose consolidated air cargo Rp 185.000/kg.
| Component | Value (JPY) | Value (Rp) |
|---|---|---|
| Item price (winning auction) | 45,000 | 4,725,000 |
| Japanese domestic shipping to warehouse | 900 | 94,500 |
| Proxy service fee (8% of goods price) | 3,600 | 378,000 |
| International air shipping 2.5 kg x Rp 185.000 | – | 462,500 |
| Insurance 0.5% of the goods price | – | 24,100 |
| Handling and management costs | – | 1,025,404 |
| Total to front of house | – | 6,709,504 |
How to read the table above:
- Delivery value = item price Rp 4.725.000 + domestic shipping Rp 94.500 + international shipping Rp 462.500 + insurance Rp 24.100 = Rp 5.306.100. Converted to dollars, the value is around USD 327, so still well below the USD 1.500 threshold and using the most concise delivery scheme.
- Handling and processing fees = Rp 1.025.404, or around 19.3% of the shipment value. All components are combined into one item, not several separate bills.
- Proxy service fee = Rp 378.000, namely compensation for purchasing, bidding and handling warehouses in Japan.
- Grand total = Rp 5.306.100 shipment value + Rp 1.025.404 handling fee + Rp 378.000 service fee = Rp 6.709.504.
- No additional bills. The figure Rp 6.709.504 is the price to the door, so there is no additional payment when the courier arrives.
This means that from the auction price Rp 4.725.000, the final cost will be around 1.42 times. You can use this multiplier number of 1.35 – 1.6 times as a quick benchmark before deciding to participate in the auction, then calculate it precisely when quoting.
Note: the proxy service fee is a purchase fee and is generally not calculated as part of the shipment value, so we separate it from the goods, postage and insurance components in the calculation above.
Strategy for Winning Auctions on Yahoo! Auctions
- Understand time zones. Japan time is WIB + 2 hours. The auction ends at 22.00 Japanese time, which means 20.00 WIB.
- Set a maximum limit. Calculate the total landed cost first, then determine the highest bid. Don’t be tempted to increase your bid at the last minute.
- Beware of auto-extensions. Many auctions automatically extend by five minutes if there is a new bid near closing.
- Read the condition of the item. General terms: shinpin (new), chuko (used), and junk (damaged or for spare parts). The word junk often appears on cheap cameras and means the item is not guaranteed to work.
- Check the seller’s reputation. Ratings below 95% and newly created accounts should be avoided for expensive items.
Most Frequently Stored Japanese Items
- Used cameras and lenses (Canon, Nikon, Sony, Fujifilm, Pentax)
- Domestic edition (JDM) Seiko, Citizen and Casio watches
- JDM car and motorbike spare parts, including Kei car accessories
- Musical instruments: guitar, effects pedals and vintage synthesizer
- Figures, gunpla, collectible cards and hobby items from Mandarake
- Kitchen equipment: Japanese knife, rice cooker, and iron teapot
- Japanese skincare and cosmetics, with BPOM regulations
- Bicycles, bicycle components and fishing equipment
Pay attention to Japanese Export and Indonesian Import Rules
Some of the things that most often hinder shipments from Japan:
- Removable lithium batteries are classified as dangerous goods in aviation. Batteries already installed in the device are generally easier to transport than separate spare batteries.
- Aerosols, perfumes, paints and flammable liquids cannot be carried by ordinary air cargo.
- Used clothes are items that are prohibited from being imported into Indonesia, so avoid buying used clothes in commercial quantities.
- Medicines, supplements and cosmetics are under the supervision of BPOM. There are exceptions for personal use in limited quantities, while for trading you must have a distribution permit.
- Wireless devices such as routers, walkie-talkies, and drones require SDPPI certification.
Always declare the contents and value of goods honestly. Inappropriate declarations risk the package being detained, sanctioned, or returned to the country of origin, and the costs are far greater than the savings originally envisioned.
Checklist Before Ordering from Japan
- Save the product link along with a screenshot of the price and variants
- Check the voltage (Japan uses 100V) and the type of plug for electronic items
- Confirm the interface language for the camera, game console, or smart device
- Estimate the weight and dimensions of the packaging, not just the weight of the item
- Set the maximum bid before the auction starts
- Make sure the goods do not fall into the prohibited category or require permission
- Ask for an estimate of the total landed cost, not just postage
- Activate insurance for used goods worth above Rp 5 juta
