How to Buy eBay Items and Send to Indonesia: Complete Guide
Guide to buying eBay items and sending them to Indonesia: three shipping methods, how to read listings, list of prohibited items, and simulated rupiah costs.
There are three ways to buy eBay items and send them to Indonesia: (1) using eBay’s international shipping program if the seller activates it, (2) sending to a forwarder’s warehouse address in America and then forwarding it to Indonesia, and (3) using a consignment service that buys and takes care of shipping. The first method is the simplest but often expensive; the second most economical way for experienced buyers; The third method is most practical if your card is declined or the seller refuses to ship outside the US.
eBay is a paradise for rare items – used cameras, old spare parts, limited edition action figures, and even industrial components that are not sold on other marketplaces. The challenge is that the majority of eBay sellers are individuals who are not used to shipping overseas. This guide streamlines the entire process, from reading the listing to calculating the total cost of getting to your home.
Can eBay Ship to Indonesia?
Yes, but not all listings. When you open the product page, look at the Shipping and Located in sections. There are three possibilities:
- Ships worldwide / Indonesia listed – sellers have provided international shipping options, sometimes via eBay’s international shipping program. You just have to checkout at the Indonesian address.
- Doesn’t ship to Indonesia – seller only serves domestically. You can still buy it from the forwarder’s warehouse address in the US.
- Local pickup only – items must be picked up in person. This is the most difficult and usually requires the help of a third party on site.
Keep in mind, when sellers use eBay’s international shipping program, shipping and handling fees are often pre-calculated. The nominal is often higher than the combined forwarder, because it is calculated using express courier rates.
Three Ways to Buy on eBay to Indonesia
| Method | Excess | Lack | Suitable for |
|---|---|---|---|
| eBay international shipping | At its simplest, full eBay buyer protection, all costs are calculated up front | Expensive postage, not all listings available, cannot be combined between sellers | One item, small value, need fast |
| Forwarder warehouse address in USA | Cheaper shipping, can consolidate many orders, access to US-only sellers | Need a card that eBay accepts, returns are more complicated, need to arrange it yourself | Regular buyer, orders a lot at once |
| Entrustment services (Jastip Ali) | Pay in rupiah, without an international card, goods are checked at the warehouse, all-in price up to your address | There is a service fee of 3% -10% | Expensive items, fussy sellers, new buyers, auctions that need to be done quickly |
Step by Step Buying on eBay
- Create an eBay account with real data and email verification. New accounts are often limited by spending limits in the first few days.
- Search for items with the right filters. Use the filters Item Location, Condition (New, Used, Refurbished, For parts), and Buying Format (Auction or Buy It Now).
- Read the listing until the end. The seller’s description is binding. If it says “for parts or not working”, the item is not working.
- Check the seller’s reputation. Ideally feedback is above 98% with a minimum of 100 transactions. Also go through recent negative reviews to see patterns of complaints.
- Pay attention to the returns policy. “Returns accepted, 30 days, buyer pays return shipping” means the return shipping costs from Indonesia are borne by you – often more expensive than the item.
- Ask the seller first. For used items, ask for additional photos and confirmation of the weight and dimensions of the box. This information determines your shipping costs later.
- Enter the shipping address. If using a forwarder warehouse, copy the exact warehouse address including your unit code or suite number.
- Pay and save proof. Save order number, invoice and domestic receipt number for tracking.
- Monitor the package until the warehouse. Once it arrives, ask for photos of the condition of the goods before sending them to Indonesia.
- Send to Indonesia. Choose air mode for small items, or combine with another order if the volume is large.
Auction vs Buy It Now: Which is Safer
The Buy It Now format provides price and time certainty, suitable if you use a consignment service because the estimated costs can be locked in at the start. The Auction format can be much cheaper, but the price is only known at the last second. If you’re targeting an auction, set a maximum limit from the start and don’t get into price wars – shipping and handling costs will add 40%-60% on top of the hammer price, so items that look cheap can turn out to be expensive.
Payment Methods and Indonesian Card Obstacles
eBay processes payments through a centralized system that accepts credit cards, certain debit cards, and some digital wallets. The constraints are similar to Amazon: the billing address must match bank data, the international transaction feature must be active, and the anti-fraud system can cancel large new account orders. If your card is rejected repeatedly, don’t keep trying because the bank may block the card temporarily. Read the repair steps in our guide about Indonesian cards being rejected by overseas marketplaces, or submit the purchase via jastip request form.
Cost Simulation: Used Camera Lenses USD 250
Real cases that we often handle. The seller only ships within the US, so the item is sent to the warehouse first. Assumed exchange rate Rp 16.000 per USD and air rate Rp 320.000 per kg – both illustrative assumptions that are subject to change.
- Auction price USD 250 x Rp 16.000 = Rp 4.000.000
- US domestic shipping to warehouse USD 12 x Rp 16.000 = Rp 192.000
- Box 22 x 18 x 16 cm = 6,336 cm3. Volume weight = 6,336 : 5000 = 1.27 kg. Actual weight is 0.9 kg, so collectible weight is rounded 1.3 kg.
- International shipping = 1.3 x Rp 320.000 = Rp 416.000
- Insurance 1% x Rp 4.000.000 = Rp 40.000
- Subtotal of goods and shipping = 4,000,000 + 192,000 + 416,000 + 40,000 = Rp 4.648.000 (equivalent to USD 290,5)
- Handling and handling fees, calculated from the subtotal above = Rp 898.226
- Deposit service fee 5% x 4,000,000 = Rp 200.000. Indonesian domestic shipping Rp 35.000.
- Total home = 4,648,000 + 898,226 + 200,000 + 35,000 = Rp 5.781.226
The total cost is about 1.45 times the price of a hammer tap. Compare this figure with the price of similar items on the local market before deciding – for rare items, the difference is often still very favorable.
| Cost post | Nominal | Portion |
|---|---|---|
| Price of goods | Rp 4.000.000 | 69.2% |
| US domestic shipping | Rp 192.000 | 3.3% |
| International shipping | Rp 416.000 | 7.2% |
| Insurance | Rp 40.000 | 0.7% |
| Handling fees | Rp 898.226 | 15.5% |
| Jastip fee + ID domestic postage | Rp 235.000 | 4.1% |
| Total | Rp 5.781.226 | 100% |
What Goes into Handling Fees
The only item in the above simulation that usually confuses new buyers is handling and handling fees. This post combines all the processes that occur after the goods leave the warehouse in America: data collection and inspection of package contents, processing of shipping documents, handling at the cargo terminal, temporary storage, until delivery to domestic couriers in Indonesia.
The amount depends on the value of the shipment – namely the price of the goods plus postage and insurance – as well as the category of goods. Books, spare parts and some electronics are in the lighter group, while bags, shoes, textiles and cosmetics cover a larger portion. Because of this, two packages with identical weights can have very different handling costs, and guessing from weight alone is almost always wrong.
At Jastip Ali all of these items are calculated and locked into your initial estimate. One price, no additional bills – no calls from the courier asking for additional payment before the package is handed over, and no need to prepare reserve funds whose nominal value you don’t know.
Take Advantage of Consolidation to Reduce Costs
The biggest advantage of buying through a warehouse in America is the ability to combine several orders into one shipment. Imagine you win three auctions from three different sellers: a 0.9 kg lens, a 0.7 kg camera body, and a 0.3 kg filter set. If sent separately, each is subject to its own weight rounding and handling fee so that the total collectible weight can reach 3.9 kg. After being combined and repackaged in one box, the collectible weight dropped to around 2.4 kg.
At a rate of Rp 320.000 per kg, the difference is (3.9 – 2.4) x Rp 320.000 = Rp 480.000 which you can save from just one packaging decision. The more small items you buy in a period, the greater the savings. Therefore, if you plan to buy several items, hold off on shipping until everything arrives at the warehouse.
Common Beginner eBay Buyer Mistakes
- Just looking at the item price. US domestic shipping, international shipping, and handling fees can add 40%-60%. Calculate the total before bidding.
- Ignoring condition keywords. Terms like as-is, untested, for parts, or no returns are serious red flags on used electronics.
- Forgot the warehouse suite number. Packages without private unit codes often cannot be identified by their owners and sit for weeks in the warehouse.
- Buying large items without measuring the box. Speakers, lights, and large toys are almost always billed based on volume weight.
- Delay picking up goods at the warehouse. After the free storage period expires, daily fees start to apply.
- Not taking photos of the condition of the goods when they arrive. Without documentation, insurance claims or claims to the seller are much more difficult.
eBay Items You Need to Avoid
- Removable lithium batteries and power banks – fall into the category of dangerous goods, often rejected by airlines.
- Liquids, aerosols and perfumes – strictly limited to air shipments.
- Medicines, supplements and cosmetics – require permission from the relevant agency before entering Indonesia.
- Replicas of weapons, radio communication devices and drones – require special permits or are prohibited.
- Fake goods or branded replicas – risk of confiscation and legal consequences.
- Items are very large but light – the volume weight can be many times the original weight. Calculate it first in volume weight calculator.
Checklist Before Pressing the Bid or Buy Button
- Seller feedback is above 98% and transaction history is adequate.
- The description of the condition of the goods is clear, with original photos, not catalog photos.
- The weight and dimensions of the box have been confirmed with the seller.
- The return policy and who will cover the return shipping are understood.
- The total cost including international shipping and handling fees has been calculated, not just the item price.
- Goods are not included in the list of import prohibitions or restrictions.
- The forwarder’s warehouse address is copied exactly, including your personal suite number.
- For items above USD 200, insurance is activated.
